Rocky Mountaineer: First Passage to the West
Day 1: Departure | Direct flight from Ottawa (YOW) to Vancouver (YVR).
Day 2: The Pre-Boarding Ceremony | Begin your journey at the Vancouver station with a professional pianist and a traditional bagpipe salute. Hear the famous "All Aboard!" call as you are guided across the red carpet to your assigned coach. Settle into your spacious, reclining leather chair featuring heated seats and adjustable lumbar support on the GoldLeaf train accommodations, as our journey towards the Rockies commences. Enjoy a gourmet, multi-course hot breakfast in the lower-level dining room.
Day 3: Canyons & Confluence (Vancouver to Kamloops) | Experience the "silty" power of the Fraser Canyon. Watch the landscape transition from lush coastal forests to the arid, desert-like hills of Lytton. A premier photo op where the two major railways cross each other and the river simultaneously at the Cisco Bridges. Marvel at the "two-toned" effect where the emerald Thompson merges with the muddy Fraser. View the dark, volcanic walls of the Black Canyon before arriving in Kamloops for the evening.
Day 4: Jasper | Typically, you would journey toward Jasper by rail, but due to the ongoing wildfires, the train ride was curtailed at Banff and we proceeded to view surrounding lakes by coach bus. Enjoy an overnight stay in Jasper with a morning city tour.
Day 5: The Continental Divide (Kamloops to Banff) | As the journey continues from Kamloops toward the majestic peaks of the Rockies, traveling through a semi-arid landscape of sagebrush and Ponderosa pines before entering the Shuswap Region, where the Salmon Arm Bay marshlands offer prime birdwatching beneath the peaks of Bastion Mountain and Mount Ida. A major highlight occurs at Three Valley Gap, where the exceptionally still waters of Three Valley Lake create a stunning "double mountain" reflection. The expedition concludes with a steady climb through the coniferous forests of Banff National Park, heading toward the towering peaks of the Continental Divide.
Day 6: Yoho National Park Wonders | Moving deeper into the heart of the mountains, the journey through Yoho National Park showcases the raw power of the Canadian Rockies, highlighted by the imposing, snow-capped presence of Chancellor Peak. The route features vibrant, glacially colored waters, from the jewel-like turquoise of Kinbasket Lake to the famous, vivid greens of Emerald Lake. Along the way, the Natural Bridge serves as a dramatic example of geological history, where the Kicking Horse River has carved a stone archway through solid limestone.
The Gems of Banff | Continuing through the most celebrated landscapes of Banff National Park, the journey highlights two of the world's most famous glacial lakes. Known as the "Jewel of the Rockies," Lake Louise stuns visitors with its emerald-colored waters, majestic mountain scenery, and dramatic glacier views. Guests can explore this iconic destination by taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline or renting a canoe for a serene paddle across the vibrant water. Situated in the heart of the majestic Valley of the Ten Peaks, Moraine Lake is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Canadian Rockies. This glacier-fed lake is famous for its vibrant turquoise-blue water—an iconic color created by rock flour carried by glacial runoff—providing a backdrop that is truly world-renowned.
Banff Townsite & Bow Falls | Finalizing the journey in the town of Banff, the itinerary focuses on the local landmarks and vibrant culture of the mountain village. Located just a short walk from Banff townsite, Bow Falls is a wide and thundering cascade that marks a dramatic point on the Bow River. Visitors can walk along the pebble-covered riverbanks to experience the rushing turquoise water firsthand, set against a stunning backdrop of steep evergreen cliffs and the surrounding peaks. The day concludes with an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture of Banff village. This is the perfect time to explore the unique shops, art galleries and restaurants along Banff Avenue, allowing for a relaxed pace to soak in the atmosphere of this world-famous mountain community.
